The US 24-Karat 99.99% Proof Buffalo Gold Coin
When the US Mint began producing 24 karat gold Buffalo Gold Coins, they joined the Canadian Royal Mint (with their Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins) in the marketing of 99.99% pure gold coins. These are the purest gold coins available on the market. The US Mint produces a Proof Buffalo Gold Coin for collectors which is available directly from the US Mint.
The design of the Proof Buffalo Gold Coin is based on the design that was used for the 1913 Buffalo Head Nickel that was created by James Earle Fraser. There is a buffalo on one side of the coin and a Native American on the other side. Due to the proofing process, it can seem like the design is actually floating above the background. Special dies are used in the proofing process, and the image is struck multiple times as a part of this process. This process makes the coins a bit more expensive than the Uncirculated Buffalo Gold Coins that are also available from the US Mint as collectors' items. All of these coins are made at the West Point location of the United States Mint.
Depending on the size of the Proof Buffalo Gold Coin you want to purchase, the price varies. If you go to the US Mint website you can see a list of currently available Proof Buffalo Gold Coins and the prices that they are selling for. At the time I am writing this, you can get a 2008 one ounce coin for $1,049.95, the 2008 1/2 ounce coin for $549.95, the 2008 1/4 ounce coin for $312.45, and the 2008 1/10 ounce coin for $164.95. You can also purchase these as a set, with those minted in 2008 selling for $2,005.45 for the set of four coins.
There are usually only a certain amount of each of the different size Proof Buffalo Gold Coin minted each year, and due to this fact it is not unusual for some or all sizes of these coins to be sold out. The US Mint many times does not allow you to preorder these coins in order to give everyone the same chance at being able to purchase them. If you are interested in buying a Proof Buffalo Gold Coin or a set of these coins, it is a good idea to pay attention to the dates when they are planning to begin sales and order them right away to make sure that you can buy what you would like. You can order them online from the US Mint.
